Your wedding reception is where the magic truly happens! It's where you gather with your loved ones to celebrate your union and create lasting memories. One of the key elements that sets the tone for your reception is the design of your tables. From the layout to the details, every aspect plays a significant role in creating the ambiance for your special day. There are many considerations you need to keep in mind when designing your reception tables. Here are some of our top things to consider when designing wedding reception tables.

Table Layout and Seating Arrangements:

Begin by determining the layout of your reception space and how many tables you'll need.

  • A six foot rectangle usually seats 6 people, and an eight foot rectangle seats 8 people. We don't usually recommend seating guests on the ends of the tables. Sometimes there are table legs in the way of guests legs or the chargers and glasses can be a tight fit.

  • Round Tables come in different sizes. A 72 inch round can seat 10-12 people. A 60 inch round seats 8-10 people. If you are having chargers you will need to do 10 at a 72 inch table and 8 at a sixty inch table.

  • Consider different seating arrangements, such as round tables for an intimate feel or long banquet tables for a more communal atmosphere.

  • A mixture of rectangle and round tables can look great. It can also be a great way to add in other colors or printed linens. We think it looks great when the round tables and rectangle tables have different linens. Incorporating more colors and patterns gives the room a more diverse and interesting look.

  • Create a seating chart to ensure that guests are seated comfortably with friends and family members they'll enjoy conversing with.

  • When making a floor remember the logistics of catering. Make sure tables aren't too close to the buffet line, kitchen doors, or the bar. If you are having servers during dinner make sure they have space to walk in between tables to place each plate.

Table Decor and Centerpieces:

Your theme or overall wedding aesthetic will best be showcased on your table designs. Consider what elements you need and want to incorporate like flowers, candles, table runners, table numbers, place cards, menus, chargers, dishes, flatware, and glasses to add personality to your tables.

  • Keep centerpieces at a height that allows guests to see and interact with each other across the table without obstruction. Large centerpieces should either be low or on an elevated stand so that guests can see and chat. Guests have asked us to move centerpieces that were obstructive!

  • Consider the type of dinner service you'll be having—plated or buffet—and how it will affect your table settings.

    • For plated dinners with a choice of protein, place cards indicating guests' meal selections are essential to ensure smooth service. Guests with dietary restrictions or preferences should be easily identifiable to catering staff.

    • When doing a family style dinner you will need room on the tables for catering staff to bring serving dishes out, so the table can not be crowded.

    • If you're opting for a buffet, decide whether you'll have plates on the tables or at the buffet line. We usually suggest that plates be at the table, it looks better for the overall design.

Details and Accents:

Pay attention to small details that can elevate the overall look of your tables, such as napkin folds, menu cards, and favors for guests.

  • Incorporate elements that reflect your personal style and interests, whether it's through custom table numbers or unique table names. There are lots of great ways to add unique elements.

Remember, designing your reception tables is an opportunity to showcase your creativity and set the stage for an unforgettable celebration! By considering the practical aspects of catering alongside your aesthetic preferences, you can create a cohesive and beautiful environment that enhances the overall experience for you and your guests. Happy planning!
